Accra Sports Stadium to be opened on Nov. 11

The Accra Sports Stadium which has been closed down for renovation works for the upcoming Total Africa Women’s Cup of Nations will finally be opened to the public on November 11, 2018 when the Black Queens of Ghana, engage the Bayana Bayana of South Africa in an international friendly.

The Accra Sports Stadium has been renovated at a cost of GH₵ 12.5 million according to officials.

The Accra Sports Stadium which is one of the host venues for the AWCON will host the Black Queens group matches, some third group games and the final match of the tournament.

Meanwhile, the friendly match between Ghana and South Africa will be used to test the readiness of the facilities ahead of the big tournament which kicks off six days after these two sides meet.

South Africa Football Association (SAFA) have confirmed the friendly match against the Black Queens to be played on November 11 at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Head coach of the Bayana Bayana team, Desiree Ellis told SAFA how important the friendly will contribute to their campaign.

“Well to play the host country Ghana is another step to check our readiness for the tournament. Getting used to the conditions as well as playing a top team like them will give us another different challenge and prepare us for the competition.

“We will get to experience first-hand the atmosphere, which will almost be like what we will go through when the tournament starts, Ellis added.

The Black Queens are currently on tour, engaging in friendlies as part of their preparations for the tournament. The Queens lost to the She-polopolo by 3-2 last Saturday. They will later take on Kenya in another friendly.

The team is expected back in the country by November 9, 2018 before they take on South Africa on Sunday November 11, 2018.
